The role of Public Relations in the Hedge Fund financial industry
January 16th 2012 -
Before, the hedge fund industry operated with utmost secrecy and avoided being talked about. Having a public relations department was not a priority. Their goal was not to be in the spotlight which made this industry very secluded, not taking advantage of public relations firm New York services. This however changed over the past years because of the industry becoming very competitive pushing hedge fund companies to hire professional public relations officer and invest in hedge fund PR.
In terms of advertising a company’s good performance, what could best do it than professional public relations? To have a successful public relations operation for a company, a good team comprising of professionals in this field should be hired. The branches of the PR group may include advertising and marketing which are the key components in attracting clients and investors. Since public relations are regarded as the communication between the company and its clients, it also serves as the medium in maintaining their good business relationship.
Even though the hedge fund industry opened its doors to public relations, there are still restrictions applied by the business on which topics to advertise and which not to. It can definitely be said that fund managers still face an amount of restriction in areas of PR. For this, the restriction applies to the specific registration status of funds. Funds such as mutual funds and investment firms considered as public offered funds or registered may openly promote their performance to the public.
Private hedge funds or those that are unregistered may not freely promote like that of the public funds. They are allowed to advertise and endorse their company’s performance in a manner that is restricted to several clients. The aim of public relations is to provide a good image of a company by promoting its performance and how good it is been doing in its industry. This may however be not as important to the hedge fund industry as compared to others because of the secrecy they impose.
However, for the hedge funds that are open to the public, having a good PR team can really help a lot. Since it is the company’s performance and status that is going to be highlighted, a talented staff should be at the top of this objective. A group of financial experts and managers from within the company may be pooled just to focus on the goal of achieving that right balance of a perfect public relations strategy for the company.
